Background of the Study
Crime reporting plays a significant role in informing the public, enhancing the justice system, and creating awareness about the rule of law. However, crime reporting often raises ethical dilemmas for journalists, particularly in how to balance public interest with respect for the rights of individuals involved in criminal cases. Dutse LGA, the capital of Jigawa State, has experienced an increasing rate of criminal activities, ranging from petty theft to more severe offenses. Local media outlets in Dutse have had to grapple with the complexities of reporting on these crimes while adhering to ethical guidelines that safeguard the reputation of individuals, protect the rights of victims, and avoid sensationalism (Aliyu & Tanimu, 2024). This study seeks to explore the ethical challenges faced by journalists in crime reporting within Dutse LGA, examining how these challenges are managed and what measures can be taken to enhance responsible reporting.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While crime reporting is essential for public awareness, it often comes with ethical challenges such as the risk of defamation, the right to privacy of suspects and victims, and the potential for sensationalizing stories. In Dutse LGA, journalists are under pressure to report crimes promptly, but the ethical boundaries between public interest and personal rights can sometimes be blurred. These challenges often lead to issues such as unfair portrayal of suspects, violation of privacy rights, and sensationalist headlines that may incite public unrest. This study aims to investigate how journalists in Dutse LGA navigate these ethical challenges in crime reporting and to suggest ways to uphold ethical standards in the face of such complexities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to crime reporting in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State. It focuses on local journalists and the ethical issues they encounter while covering crime stories. The research does not extend to national media outlets or cover other forms of journalism outside crime reporting.
